Project Title: “The avian dawn chorus across the UK: using new technology to study breeding bird song”
Institution: Durham University, Newcastle University, British Trust for Ornithology (BTO)
Acoustic monitoring of animal populations and communities is becoming an increasingly efficient process thanks to advances in passive sound recording equipment and associated analytical software. My current research exploits this technology to investigate the phenomenon that is the avian dawn chorus, specifically, the factors that influence its daily and seasonal onset, intensity and duration as it sweeps across the UK. In turn, these factors may be affected by climate change, with potentially adverse implications for the dawn chorus and the fitness of the players within it.
