Research Experience Placement scheme

IAPETUS are delighted to announce we will be running NERC’s Research Experience Placement (REP) scheme this summer, giving undergraduate students studying quantitative disciplines outside of NERC’s scientific remit the opportunity to work within one of our universities on a paid 8-10 week placement on an environmental sciences project.

 

Projects

Please note all projects listed below will be for 8-10 weeks in length and will take place over the summer of 2019. The agreed length will be determined between IAPETUS and the applicant following offer.

 

Prof. Ian Bailiff, Develop a pilot procedure for the measurement of the spatial distribution of lithogenic radionuclides within sedimentary and lithic dating samples

Placement Location: Department of Archaeology, Durham University

 

Dr. Axel Hagermann, Comparing scattering models of light in snow and granular ice

Placement Location: Biological and Environmental Sciences, University of Stirling

 

Dr Dan Lawrence, Investigate the ways in which communities in the Fertile Crescent responded to changing climate

Placement Location: Department of Archaeology, Durham University

 

Dr Rebecca Hodge, The impact of cohesive sediment on gravel entrainment

Placement Location: Department of Geography, Durham University

  • Submit a completed application form and your CV to contact.iapetus@durham.ac.uk by no later than 12 noon on Thursday 18th April 2019.

 

Eligibility of students

Selected students must meet all of the following criteria to be eligible for a REP. The students must:

  • Be studying for an undergraduate degree in a quantitative discipline outside of NERC’s scientific remit (e.g. mathematics, statistics, computing, engineering, physics).
  • Be applying for a placement in a different department from their undergraduate
  • Be undertaking their first undergraduate degree studies (or integrated Masters).
  • Be expected to obtain a first or upper second class UK honours
  • Be eligible for subsequent NERC PhD funding (i.e. UK, EU or right to remain in the UK).

 

Reporting

The student and the project supervisor will be required to complete a brief report on the outcome of the placement. The REP Final Report Form will be sent to the supervisor and student during the second half of the project.
